KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda National Media Group (UNMG) is a Ugandan media company focused on digital journalism, multimedia publishing and news production. The company positions itself as a digital-first media organisation with ambitions to expand its presence across online news, broadcasting and print publishing.
UNMG traces its roots to Horizon Media Uganda, a company founded in 2008 by businessman Ssekaayi Simon. After Horizon Media Uganda ceased operations following financial difficulties in 2018, the business was reorganised under the Uganda National Media Group brand.
The group was officially launched in July 2026 as part of efforts to establish a new media organisation focused on independent journalism and digital innovation.
Among its flagship projects is National Horizon, a digital newspaper covering politics, business, education, entertainment, sports and investigative reporting. The publication serves as the group's principal news platform.
The company's leadership includes founder Ssekaayi Simon, Chief Executive Officer Ssentamu Derrick, Board Director Wasemi Sylvia, and Non-Executive Director Isaac Ssegawa.
According to the company, UNMG seeks to produce factual reporting, investigative journalism and public-interest stories while using digital platforms to reach audiences across Uganda.
UNMG enters a media industry that includes established organisations such as Nation Media Group Uganda, Vision Group, Next Media Services and several independent broadcasters and online publishers. Competition in Uganda's media sector has intensified as audiences increasingly consume news through digital platforms and social media.
Media analysts note that success for emerging news organisations depends on editorial credibility, sustainable business models, technological innovation and the ability to build public trust.
As it develops its operations, Uganda National Media Group aims to contribute to Uganda's evolving media landscape by expanding access to news and strengthening digital journalism.
