When Innovation Fills the Bar but Empties the Soul

I recently came across a statement that stuck with me: “There’s a full circle of things you can do with AI — it can help with engagement, like stocking the bar or selling more jerseys. All of this adds to the income. The other drains it.”

At first glance, this sounds perfectly reasonable — even visionary. In today’s world, AI can optimize sales, automate marketing, personalize experiences, and streamline decision-making. In other words, it can fill the bar and sell out the jerseys. It can make business smarter, faster, and more profitable.

But as I sat with that statement, I began to reflect on what “the other” really means — the part that drains income, drains time, and perhaps even drains us.

AI is powerful, but it’s not human. It doesn’t feel the fatigue of overwork, the anxiety of uncertainty, or the loneliness of leadership. It doesn’t wrestle with burnout, purpose, or identity — we do. And when all our focus shifts to what adds income, we risk ignoring what adds value to our lives and the lives of those we lead.

In professional life, I’ve seen teams lose their spark because efficiency became the new god. Metrics overtook meaning. In chasing engagement through algorithms, we sometimes forget to engage each other — to listen, to empathize, to connect. That’s where the drain begins. Not in the balance sheet, but in the human spirit that keeps everything moving.

This isn’t an argument against AI. It’s a reminder to anchor innovation in intention. Mental health in the workplace isn’t just about reducing stress — it’s about preserving humanity amidst progress. It’s about ensuring that in the full circle of what technology can do, we still make room for what only people can feel.

So yes, let AI help stock the bar and sell the jerseys. Let it work smarter for you. But also take time to nurture what cannot be automated — compassion, presence, creativity, and the quiet moments that restore your inner drive.

Because in the end, what drains or sustains us isn’t the tool. It’s how we choose to use it.
