When the Crown Doesn’t Belong to the King

Life has this uncanny way of flipping scripts. In the wilderness, the crown does not always belong to the king. Nature doesn’t respect titles; it tests resilience. One image has stayed with me: a hyena carrying the severed head of a lion. At first, it felt absurd. How could the “scavenger” walk away with the trophy of the “hunter”? But then I realized—it’s a metaphor for life itself.

Many of us grew up believing strength, talent, or position would always guarantee victory. Yet adulthood keeps teaching us otherwise. Titles don’t protect us from setbacks. Being “the king” in one season doesn’t mean you won’t face moments where others—those you least expect—walk away with what you thought was yours.

I’ve been there. Losing opportunities I thought I had earned. Watching doors close without explanation. Struggling with the weight of comparison, shame, and self-doubt. And here’s what I’ve learned: survival isn’t about always being on top—it’s about adapting, rebuilding, and not letting one loss define your entire story.

For millennials especially, this cuts deep. We live in a world where we’re constantly reminded of other people’s highlight reels—new jobs, promotions, achievements, relationships. It can feel like the hyena has snatched our crown. But here’s the truth: losing ground doesn’t mean losing value.

Resilience is the real crown. Mental health isn’t just about surviving tough moments—it’s about reframing how we see them. It’s okay to grieve losses, but it’s even more powerful to rise with perspective. Every setback, every “hyena moment,” is an invitation to grow tougher, wiser, and more self-aware.

So next time life strips away your crown, don’t see it as the end of your reign. See it as the start of your evolution. Because the crown that truly matters is the one forged within—strength, resilience, courage, and the ability to keep moving forward even when humbled.
