When the Lion Is the Barber

Have you ever felt like life puts you in situations where the odds are stacked against you—or where the people in charge seem to thrive on your struggle? I once heard a proverb that stuck with me: “In the village where the lion is the barber, the goat keeps an afro.” At first glance, it’s funny. But the deeper truth hits differently: sometimes, we’re forced to navigate systems—or people—who don’t have our best interests at heart.

I’ve been the “goat” in my story. I’ve trusted leaders, managers, or even friends who didn’t see my potential—or worse, who deliberately trimmed it. And like that goat, I’ve had to find ways to protect myself, stay resilient, and sometimes grow in ways the environment wasn’t built for.

Here’s what this taught me about mental health: self-preservation is not selfish. Boundaries are not weakness. When the world around you seems designed to limit you, your mental well-being depends on your ability to adapt, protect your energy, and keep growing—even if it looks like resistance or defiance to others.

For Millennials navigating hyper-competitive workplaces, social media pressures, and personal growth in real-time, the lesson is clear: guard your mind. Protect your joy. Seek environments and relationships that nourish your growth. And when you can’t control the lion, find your afro. Find your voice. Find your resilience.

The goat didn’t give up. And neither should we. Life will throw lions our way, but how we show up—confident, persistent, and unshakable—defines our mental and emotional strength. Sometimes survival is about cleverness. Other times, it’s about patience. And often, it’s about knowing your worth enough to walk away from what diminishes you.

So, my mates, if you feel worn down by the “lions” in your life, remember: your mental health is your crown. Protect it. Nurture it. And wear it proudly, even if the world doesn’t recognize it yet.
