When Wrong Turns Lead Us Right

There’s an African proverb that has stayed with me for years: “Learn from your mistakes but never regret. One day you will realize that sometimes the wrong choices bring us to the right places.”

I’ve had my fair share of “wrong turns” — decisions that seemed like failures at the time, paths that felt uncertain, and moments when self-doubt whispered louder than courage. But looking back, I see that every so-called mistake was quietly redirecting me toward something I needed to learn, someone I needed to meet, or a strength I didn’t know I had.

In professional life, we often carry the silent weight of regret. A missed promotion. A failed project. A partnership that didn’t work out. The inner critic plays its part well — dissecting what we should have done differently. But what if we reframed regret as reflection? What if, instead of punishment, we saw mistakes as invitations to grow?

This shift isn’t just about optimism; it’s a powerful mental health practice. Self-compassion — the ability to treat ourselves with the same kindness we’d offer a colleague or friend — reduces anxiety, burnout, and imposter syndrome. It helps us separate our worth from our work.

Professionals across all disciplines face moments of uncertainty and failure. Yet, the most resilient among us aren’t those who never fall — they’re those who learn to fall forward. They understand that progress isn’t linear; it’s a dance between setbacks and breakthroughs.

When we stop fearing mistakes, we start embracing movement. We try again. We innovate. We connect more authentically. And we realize that sometimes, the wrong door had to close for the right one to open.

So today, if you’re carrying regret, I invite you to put it down for a moment. Reflect instead. Ask yourself, “What did this teach me?” Because somewhere between the missteps and the milestones lies your becoming — the unfolding of who you were meant to be all along.
