Why Do I Keep Thinking About This Kid?

Why Do I Keep Thinking About This Kid?

Today, I had to travel urgently to Benin City.

It wasn’t planned. I hadn’t prepared. I didn’t even have the money needed for the journey — until this morning, when some unexpected money came through. I quickly washed the few clothes I would need and packed them damp into my small travel bag.

By the time I got to Benin, I was already feeling hot — and not just from the weather. The delay at the park (over 2 hours!) and being asked to pay just to use the restroom? My hotness was hotting.

We finally made it, though slower than I’d hoped. Around 7:30 p.m., while passing Ring Road on my way to Ekewan Road, I saw this young boy — he couldn’t have been more than 10 — still hawking sachet water in the dim evening light.

While I was silently lamenting how Ring Road keeps getting dirtier by the year, this boy walked up to the bus window and said:

"Aunty, I want to dash you one pure water."

Before I could process what he was saying, the bus began to move. I didn't even get to respond.

And now, I can’t stop thinking about that boy.

Why was he still hawking at that time of the night?

Why did he want to dash me water — unprovoked?

I don't know his name. I don’t know his story. But he’s stayed in my heart since that moment.
