Why Feminist Power Needs Feminist Funding

from AWID

In 2024, AWID asked over 1,000 feminist and LGBTQI+ groups how much funding they really have.

The results were heartbreaking—but not surprising.

I’ve been telling stories of women from underfunded communities, and I’ve felt the limits of doing big work with small resources.

Some of us create zines, run learning circles, support survivors, or offer platforms for unheard voices—with zero formal funding.

Feminists are resourceful, but we shouldn’t have to build the future on empty pockets.

We need funders who see value in stories, in slow work, in healing work, in community-led solutions.

If you’ve ever done unpaid feminist work, this report is for you. If you’ve ever funded such work—please read it with open eyes and an open budget.
