A few days ago on the International Day of the Girl Child, someone asked me a question that got me thinking. So in my usual fashion, I made a post on Facebook advocating for the rights of the girl and this person sent me a message asking why I am so passionate about advocating for girls’ rights despite being a mom of three boys.
Here’s my response 👇🏽
Because I am raising boys who will grow into men, and the future I envision for them is one where they respect, support, and champion the rights and dignity of every woman and girl. Men that will stand alongside girls, not above them.
Advocating for the rights of girls isn’t just a cause for me; it’s a vision of the future I want for my sons. I want them to grow up in a world where girls are empowered to dream, lead, and thrive. A world where my sons don’t just witness equality, but actively participate in it.
I want my boys to know that advocating for girls isn’t about excluding them; it’s about creating a world where both boys and girls can thrive equally, without the weight of gender-based barriers. My boys are part of this mission, and by teaching them about equality and respect, I hope to contribute to a world where gender is not a limitation but an opportunity for collaboration, growth, and mutual respect.
Every girl deserves a future where her dreams aren’t restricted by societal expectations, and every boy deserves to grow up understanding that empowering girls is not a threat but an enhancement to the world we all share.
I don’t just want to raise good men; I want to raise better men. Men who understand that when girls rise, everyone rises. So while doing the work professional, I’m also very engaged at home because when we teach our sons to honor the strength and rights of girls, we’re shaping a future that’s brighter for all.
