My Sister and My daughters on a Weekend Day Out.. heading to the River to Wash!
Woman of Strength and Purpose
My younger sister is one of the strongest women I know. She possesses a rare courage and resilience that continues to inspire me every day. At just 18 years old, while still in Grade 10, her life took a difficult turn when she became pregnant by her boyfriend, a man older than her. He accepted responsibility and agreed to marry her, but while he continued his university studies, my sister had to withdraw from school.
She gave birth to a beautiful, chubby baby boy, and despite the challenges, she was determined to return to her education. With the support of our family, I even breastfed her child alongside my own daughter so that she could focus on her studies. My sister repeated Grade 10 and advanced to Grade 12, but midway through, she became pregnant again and was forced to withdraw once more. Our family stepped in to raise both children, while she struggled with the reality of her situation.
Her husband, meanwhile, completed his studies and became a high school teacher. During this time, my sister discovered that he was seeing another woman and had already introduced her to his family as his “wife-to-be.” Heartbroken, my sister chose to let him go. He married the other woman, leaving her to raise their children alone.
Despite the betrayal and the loss of her education, my sister never gave up on her children. She took full responsibility for their wellbeing, raising them with love, dignity, and strength. She never denied them the chance to meet their father, but the children naturally gravitated toward her, recognizing her unwavering devotion.
Today, her eldest son is in Grade Eight, having faced a difficult period of imprisonment for nine months due to drunk and disorderly conduct. Her second-born son is now in Grade Ten at a secondary school, and I have stepped in to help look after him. Her third-born child is being cared for by our other sister, while she herself is solely left to raise her only daughter, who is in Grade Four. Through all of this, I have become her closest confidante—offering encouragement, comfort, and reminding her that life is all about being strong.
My sister has never remarried. She has said she does not wish to, choosing instead to dedicate her life to her children. She has built her own path—selling doughnuts to earn an income, playing football as her pastime, and carrying herself with a cheerful smile and a bounce in her step. She has never looked back at the man who failed her and her children, nor has she taken him to court for child maintenance. She simply continues to provide, with grace and determination.
There are times when I feel sorrow watching her struggle to make ends meet, but she always does it with ease, her smile never fading. And when I express frustration toward the man who neglected her and the children, she gently reminds me: “He will one day harvest what he has sown.”
She has lived to be the happiest person in the house every day. She does not see her life as a burden. Instead, she finds comfort in having fun through sports and playing with her daughter. Truly, she has turned pain into resilience, betrayal into independence, and hardship into a life of dignity.
Today, I honor my sister as a woman of extraordinary strength, a woman of unshakable character, and a woman living with purpose. She is a Woman of Strength and Purpose—an inspiration not only to me but to everyone who knows her.
