Today March 22 is World Water Day.
The theme this year is Water for peace and prosperity.
In our local parlance in Nigeria ,we usually say" water no get enemy". That means everyone is a friend to water. That's to emphasize how much we all need water , especially clean water. This means we all have a common need of water. Every human does.
This common need can be a rallying point to solving areas of conflict we have with each other.
There are lessons to learn from water.
The force: Water has such force that if anything stands in it's way, it clears it to keep going. Reason why dams bursts and floods happen or why water waves capsize ships. Water is a powerful and unstoppable force. Together, when we combine our power from within each of us, and it becomes power "with" and we use it " to" nothing can stop us. Problems will be solved from the roots.
The refreshing nature of water: It refreshes anyone that is thirsty. From the weary traveller, to the little baby who needs a drink. May we refresh those who come in contact with us. May we bring change to our sphere of influence.
The fluidity of water: Life is fluid just like water. It is never constant. They say the only thing constant is change. When we work with the consciousness that nothing remains for ever, it frees us to adjust to the changes we face per time. Seasons go, seasons come, we keep moving, never holding too hard to anything, stretching ourselves a little here and a little there, trying a new thing, open to learning, relearning and unlearning. Never allowing ourselves to be stagnant, we keep moving, even if we have to craw! When we remain inmorbid, we smell like stagnant water.. Our growth is a function of how fluid we are.
The cleansing nature of water: We wash our wounds, clothes, plates, etc with water. We can learn to be problem solvers wherever we are, no matter what the challenge is. If we can not solve a problem, the least we can do is not add to it. Most of the world's problems are man-made. Like water, we can bring solutions to problem wherever we are.
The giving nature of water: Big rivers are created by smaller streams pouring in their content to form bigger waters. They are not selfish or self centered. If one sister is shining today, we keep clapping until it's our turn to shine. People are made by other people. We stand by lifting up others. As we lend our shoulders as ladders for others to climb up , therein lies our own greatness.
An ocean is made up by drops of water. Every drop of water is colorless, odourless and formless. Every drop has same characteristics as a big ocean.
It takes the color and shape of the container it is put in. We all are of different colors, background and creed. These are the" containers " we have been put in. Though diverse, we are each unique. We posses same intrinsic value and worth as much as any person. We all are human and should see and treat each other as such.
In commemoration of this World Water Day, be reminded that clean water is not common. Many do not have access to it. In many countries of the world, clean water is a luxury. Some regions are experiencing droughts. Don't waste your water. Turn your faucet off if not in use. Seek other ways to conserve water. Support projects that bring water to places that lack. Don't drop waste into rivers or beaches. Water is home to many living things. When our waters are polluted, it affects the habitats of this living things.
Lastly, drink water! It has many health benefits. It keeps you from dehydration.
It aids digestion and allows a smooth metabolism of the body.
Happy world Water Day!
