You Will Always Find Me Among the People

A mentorship talk with teenage mothers in Ampath's chamas for change initiative

This is where my heart beats fastest—in the midst of the everyday struggles and triumphs of real people. In 2020, I found myself in a small village in Bungoma, a place where the challenges were as vivid as the smiles of its inhabitants. At that time, the community was grappling with a significant rise in teenage pregnancy and a growing sense of insecurity, much of which stemmed from the idle hours that weighed heavily on the youth. It was a time that demanded urgent attention and heartfelt intervention.

As a university student, I could not stand idly by. A friend and I sat down together, questioning how we could bring about change. We realized that while the issues were complex, the solution lay in reconnecting with the people—especially the young women whose lives hung in the balance. We embarked on a journey from village to village, determined to mentor teenage girls, to listen to their stories, and to show them that there was a life beyond the confines of their immediate surroundings.

Often, people’s visions are limited by the horizon they see—much like looking out to sea without realizing that there is a vast world beyond. For me, that first glimpse of the outside world came through the glow of a TV screen. It was there that I discovered the richness and diversity of life, an experience that sparked within me a relentless dream: to envision something bigger, not only for myself but for the communities that nurtured me.

Armed with that vision, we created a video aimed at the young teenage mothers who had never ventured far from their villages. Our goal was simple yet profound—to show them that there is so much more waiting beyond their current reality. We wanted them to know that they can work hard to achieve their dreams, that their worth is not defined by the limitations of their immediate environment, and that they are capable of reaching heights previously unimagined.

This work reaffirmed who I truly am: a people person at heart. I thrive when I am among others, sharing ideas and learning from their experiences. I believe in the power of communication and connection to uplift lives, to build knowledge, and to spark the kind of change that transforms communities. Growing up in a less privileged home, I knew from an early age that there was more to life than the narrow view of poverty, ignorance, and limited ambition. I was driven by the desire to see Africa break free from these chains—a desire to see my people grow and glow with newfound hope and opportunity.

That spirit, that drive to uplift, remains at the core of who I am. Every conversation, every shared idea, every moment of guidance is a step toward a brighter future. And as long as there are people in need of a hand to hold or a dream to nurture, you will always find me among them, doing everything I can to help them see that there is indeed something more—something magnificent—waiting just beyond the horizon.
