Call for Participation in Questionnaire: UN HRC Survey on People’s Right to Peace

Hello Everyone!

I am thrilled to reach out to you with this exciting opportunity. This is a chance to make sure that women are included in peace making processes, and, in particular, that women's voices from your community are heard. We look to you as leaders of in the PulseWire network to speak out with your perspectives on these important issues.

World Pulse is committed to enabling the many strong voices of our community to be heard, and facilitating their participation in discussions around policies and programs to promote women’s rights.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has invited leaders around the world to provide input regarding the right of peoples to peace. World Pulse is inviting PulseWire members to share their thoughts by filling out the questionnaire, and World Pulse will compile the results and submit them to the UN HRC.

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 1984 called the “Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace”, which reaffirms the United Nations goal to maintain international peace and security.

What doeas “people’s right to peace” mean?
The Declaration recognizes that life without war is a prerequisite for the material well-being, development and progress of countries, and that the maintenance of peace for peoples is the sacred duty of each State. The four principles of the declaration are the following:

1. Solemnly proclaims that the peoples of our planet have a sacred right to peace;




2. Solemnly declares that the preservation of the right of peoples to peace and the promotion of its implementation constitute a fundamental obligation of each State;




3. Emphasizes that ensuring the exercise of the right of peoples to peace demands that the policies of States be directed towards the elimination of the threat of war, particularly nuclear war, the renunciation of the use of force in international relations and the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means on the basis of the Charter of the United Nations;




4. Appeals to all States and international organizations to do their utmost to assist in implementing the right of peoples to peace through the adoption of appropriate measures at both the national and the international level.

About the UN HRC Advisory Committee - Right to Peace:
In its resolution 14/3, the Human Rights Council requested to the Advisory Committee to prepare a report on the draft declaration on the right of peoples to peace. At its sixth session, the Committee adopted a progress report for submission to and consideration by the Human Rights Council at its seventeenth session (A/HRC/17/39).
