What happened:
When I first introduced Bayanihan Books, it was a simple but powerful idea: mapping community libraries across the Philippines so learners could find safe, accessible, and inclusive spaces for knowledge. This initiative grew out of my work with Ecoshoppe PH and Empowering Women PH, and it immediately opened my eyes to something bigger—many of us are already building small initiatives for education, climate, and sustainability, but often in silos.
That realization sparked the transition from Bayanihan Books to Bayanihan Map.
Bayanihan Map will be a collective directory for all intentional community-led activities aligned with the UN SDGs—from libraries to clothes swapping, from coastal cleanups to feeding programs. The goal is simple yet ambitious: make grassroots initiatives visible, connect changemakers, and show that when we unite, we can fill in the gaps between our efforts and amplify our collective impact.
Impact so far:
- Prototyped a submission form for libraries, now expanded to accommodate multiple SDG-aligned initiatives.
- Sparked interest from community leaders who see value in having their efforts mapped and connected.
- Secured early sponsorship support through Ecoshoppe PH and Empowering Women PH to begin building the foundation.
Next Steps:
- Roll out the first version of the map with categories (education, environment, livelihood, etc.).
- Partner with local organizations and schools to gather data across different regions.
- Pilot filtering by location so anyone can easily find initiatives in their area.
- Share the movement with more sponsors and collaborators to ensure long-term sustainability.
Why this matters:
We are all doing meaningful work in our own corners, but the real power of Bayanihan is in coming together. By mapping small acts, we reveal the bigger picture: a nation of communities in motion, building resilience and change through collective action.
