From Bayanihan Books to Bayanihan Map
Bayanihan Books began as a simple yet powerful idea: mapping community libraries across the Philippines so learners could find safe, accessible, and inclusive spaces for knowledge. The initiative grew out of the community-building work of Ecoshoppe PH and Empowering Women PH, and it quickly revealed something larger: many of us are already running grassroots initiatives in education, climate, livelihood, and sustainability, but often in silos.
That realization sparked a transition: Bayanihan Books has now grown into Bayanihan Map.
What is Bayanihan Map?
Bayanihan Map is a collective directory of intentional, community-led initiatives across the Philippines, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Instead of mapping only libraries, the Map will showcase a wider range of grassroots efforts such as:
📚 Community libraries and reading hubs
🌱 Environmental projects like coastal cleanups, mangrove planting, or waste reduction drives
🍲 Feeding programs and nutrition initiatives
👩‍👩‍👧 Clothes swaps, livelihood circles, and women’s cooperatives
🎠Arts, culture, and heritage preservation
The goal is clear: make grassroots initiatives visible, connect changemakers, and demonstrate that when we unite, we amplify our impact.
Early Momentum and Partnerships
Thanks to Empowering Women PH, we were able to present these ideas to Civy and their partners, sparking our first concept meeting. Together, we explored feasibility, key features, and the legal and technical considerations of mapping community activities. This marks the first step in turning Bayanihan Map into a functional civic platform.
In the meantime, we remain grounded in grassroots action through ongoing programs under Empowering Women PH and Ecoshoppe PH. These activities reflect the very essence of bayanihan that the platform seeks to capture and amplify.
So far, Bayanihan Map has:
- Prototyped a submission form (originally for libraries, now expanded for SDG-aligned initiatives).
- Sparked interest among community leaders who see the value of being mapped and connected.
- Secured early sponsorship and volunteer support through Ecoshoppe PH, Empowering Women PH, and their networks.
- Opened doors for collaboration with Civy to explore app development.
Example of Grassroots Work in Action
đź“– Spaces to Grow: Aurora Quezon Elementary Outdoor Library Build-Up
đź“… November 28, 2025
📍 Malate, Manila
Aurora Quezon Elementary School is home to hundreds of curious and creative children who spend long days on campus. While the school provides education and guidance, there remains untapped potential to create more child-friendly spaces for reading, waiting, and exploring beyond the classroom.
On November 28, our partners and volunteers will launch Spaces to Grow: an outdoor library build-up designed to transform campus space into a vibrant, student-centered hub. The new library will feature books, benches, tables, and colorful learning corners. With the support of teachers, parents, and the community, it will become a haven where students can relax, learn, and grow.
📌 Why it matters: A library is not simply a space with books—it is a gateway to dreams. With the help of sponsors, volunteers, and partners, Aurora Quezon Elementary students will soon enjoy a nurturing space where curiosity and imagination thrive.
This project will also be one of the first initiatives featured on Bayanihan Map, demonstrating how local actions can connect to a larger, nationwide movement.
Why Bayanihan Map Matters
Across the Philippines, inspiring grassroots efforts are already underway: teachers running feeding programs, mothers organizing clothes swaps, youth leading coastal cleanups, and barangays starting seed banks and libraries.
Yet, most of these efforts remain unseen—fragmented, unconnected, and often struggling alone. Bayanihan Map seeks to change that.
By mapping these initiatives, we:
- Increase visibility so that no effort remains hidden.
- Enable connections between changemakers who can strengthen each other’s work.
- Amplify impact by showing partners, funders, and citizens the bigger picture of community action.
This is not about duplicating government services or competing with NGOs. It is about filling a gap: weaving scattered acts of bayanihan into a stronger, more visible movement of collective care.

Call to Action
We are inviting:
- Community leaders to submit their initiatives and make their work visible.
- Organizations and LGUs to partner in collecting and showcasing projects.
- Donors and sponsors to support not just one initiative, but a collective movement.
- Volunteers and advocates to help build, test, and grow Bayanihan Map.
Every small act matters. Every initiative deserves to be seen. When we map these acts together, we reveal a powerful truth: the Philippines is already a nation of communities in motion, building resilience and change through collective action.
