Breaking the Silence: Why Menstrual Education Matters for Every Girl

When we visit schools and communities through our NGO’s Teenage Well Project, I always ask the girls one simple question:

“What did your mother tell you when you had your first period?”

The answers rarely change.

“My mom only said, You’ve become a woman.”

“She warned me that if anyone touches me, I’ll get pregnant.”

And that’s it. No explanation of what is happening inside their bodies, no guidance on how to care for themselves, no reassurance that menstruation is natural and nothing to be ashamed of.

This silence is more than just uncomfortable; it’s dangerous. Without proper menstrual education, many teenage girls face myths, fear, and even school absenteeism because they lack the knowledge and resources to manage their periods with dignity.

That is why Motherhood NG Initiative (MNI) is committed to changing the narrative.

This International Day of the Girl Child 2025, we are taking action through our 3rd Annual Teenage Well Outreach, reaching 4,000 girls across four locations:

🌍 Ota, Ogun State

🌍 Lagos State

🌍 Kuchingoro Community, Abuja

🌍 Akure, Ondo State

During this outreach, we will:

Educate girls on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health.

Distribute free sanitary pads, ensuring every girl can manage her period with dignity.

Engage in open conversations to break harmful myths and empower girls to stay in school.

But we can’t do this alone. You can help Pad a girl.

Sponsoring one girl costs just ₦5,000—a small amount that can keep her in school, informed, and confident.

Businesses can also partner with us and enjoy perks like:

This International Day of the Girl Child, let’s create a generation where menstruation is no longer a taboo but a shared understanding of womanhood and health.

Join us. Sponsor a girl. Be the change.

Together, we can turn whispered warnings into powerful knowledge.
