Insights from 12 women regarding their fertility journey

My approach was to use Interviews as the qualitative research approach to gain insights into fertility challenges experienced by women. I have conducted interviews with 12 Indian women aged 18-49, based in US and who had

  • Tried to conceive using IUI, IVF or other fertility treatments
  • Had other reproductive health challenges while trying to conceive

Using Sonix, an audio transcript software, I was able to transcribe all the audio interviews to text PDF files. Using Dedoose, a thematic analysis software, I performed open coding to understand the underlying themes and persona.

Key insights

  • The participants relied solely on their health care provider for information related to reproductive health, diagnosis of infertility, available treatment options etc.
  • The participants looked for information online, however they were hesitant to rely on them.
  • Due to cultural taboo, they did not openly discuss their problems.
  • Cultural upbringing had an impact on their decision making process.

Most of the interviews I conducted were with women who were in their early forties. Back when they were trying to conceive (around 10-15 years ago) the smartphone and apps were not that popular . My goal is to find insights into the usage of tracking apps and privacy concerns amongst app users. Hence, I am planning to modify my sample population to include Indian women based in the US who have ever used fertility tracking apps.
